Chris, congratulations on your winning image - Dream come true

Chris Botes Pretoria Photographic Society Dream come true

Chris says:
During the month of August, my wife and I were fortunate enough to spend some time at Zimanga game reserve escaping all the madness that Covid has brought about. The days and evenings did not disappoint and the reserve lived up to its reputation. This afternoon/evening we were blessed with a variety of bird species as well as giraffe, nyala, warthogs, rhino, buffalo and side striped jackals visiting the waterhole.

The surprise and the highlight of my still short photographic journey was when out of the darkness a small and very shy serval appeared like a ghost in the night. For a few minutes, which felt like only a blink of an eye, I was able to take some of the most amazing photos of this elusive prince of the bush. As stealthy as he appeared he took his leave and disappeared back into the night, leaving my wife and I with hearts pounding and smiles from ear to ear. At about 03:00AM a very shy serval graced us with its presence again, but it was different from the previous visit. He/she was extremely shy and disappeared back into the night as quickly as it appeared, leaving me perplexed and doubting my eyes. Surely, we could not be lucky enough for this elusive creature to bless us with a visit twice in one evening... Then without warning the dream that became a reality hours before were blown out of the water. A ghostly image appeared out of the darkness and slowly approached the waterhole. Seconds later a second image came into focus that left me in awe. In front of me were not one but two servals quenching their thirst. Words can’t begin to describe my emotions nor how blessed I felt. For what must have been a minute or two I just sat there mesmerized in the moment before my shutter nearly caught fire.

Our 1st runner-up is Tania Cholwich from AFO Photography Club with "Kake van die Dood"

HOW DOES THIS COMPETITION WORK?

Members of PSSA only are invited to personally enter any one image per month into this competition, and submit it via Photovault at www.photovaultonline.com.  If you are not a member of PSSA, you can unfortunately not enter this competition.

If your image has won the Senior or Junior club competition at your club during the month, it will be entered in either of those two competitions for the month.  PLEASE do not enter it into the Web site competition as well for obvious reasons.  Remember, it is the same judges that judge all three competitions for a particular month and having the same image in two competitions, Senior or Junior and the Web site competition will disadvantage the image. If your image does not win in the Senior or Junior Club Competition and you would like to enter it into the Web site competition, you can do so as long as it is a month or so later.

The winning image will be displayed on the home page of our Website for the duration of the month.

Instructions on how to upload your entry onto Photovault can be downloaded here  doc

Frequently we do require high resolutions of these images as PSSA use them for Print Exhibitions to promote PSSA as well as showcasing the work being done around the country.

At the end of the PSSA calendar year (30 June of each year) the Website Competition Winning Image of the Year is selected.
